July 29, 2014

IUPUI’s online presence will soon have a new look and feel when the campus launches its new website in early August.

The new IUPUI gateway website is designed to be more user-friendly for the public, providing easy navigation between  campus, school-specific and other IUPUI domains.

Nasser Paydar, executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer, said the impetus behind the website redesign is IUPUI’s new strategic plan and its high priority on enhancing student success.

“IUPUI’s new look is an early win for our student success initiatives,” said Paydar. “Now the website will speak directly to our largest audience -- current and prospective students -- while providing access to information valued by faculty, staff and other stakeholders, such as research opportunities and community engagement.”

Troy Brown, director of campus and university branding for IU Communications, is also enthusiastic about the role the updated website will play in IUPUI’s future.

“Everything is jumping to a new level at IUPUI,” Brown said. ‘We want to take advantage of all the information that comes out of our campus, and this site will help our students gather it quickly and easily.”

IU Communications designed the site using a mobile-first approach, ensuring visual consistency and functionality for all users regardless of how they choose to access the website. The site will be user-friendly on a desktop or laptop computer, or on an iPhone, iPad or other mobile and tablet device. Based on Google Analytics reports, IUPUI receives a heavy volume of traffic through mobile devices. This made adaptability an important feature in development of the site.

IUPUI’s updated site aligns well with the recommendations of national studies done on website preferences of prospective students. Those studies suggest that for more than 50 percent of such students, a university’s (or campus’s) website plays a significant role in their decision to apply. For most students, the greatest challenge encountered is website navigation, which is why developing a more streamlined, user-friendly interface was a primary goal for IU Communications.

The  design, content, IA and development teams created the new website to be flexible and sustainable for the years ahead. This allows the campus and its schools the ability to convey key messages to their constituents while retaining the ability to adapt to market and academic changes.

The new site will rely heavily on images and typography that reflect academic and social life at IUPUI, the campus’s connections to the city of Indianapolis, and the career opportunities that are available to students enrolled in IUPUI-based schools and programs.
