Jaguars ready to tip off the season
Oct. 15, 2013
Join the fun at this year’s Jaguars Tip-Off Luncheon, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 30, and get a glimpse of IUPUI's future basketball home at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The luncheon will feature season-opening remarks by the head coaches, Austin Parkinson for the women and Todd Howard for the men, plus athletics director Michael Moore. After meeting members of the two teams and getting familiar with their season prospects, fans can take a tour of the fairgrounds site, which is undergoing renovations before the Jaguars start playing there in the 2014-15 season.
Parkinson’s women’s team is coming off a breakthrough year, as the Jags went 20-12 and earned a berth in the women’s NIT postseason tournament. Howard’s men’s team struggled through an injury-riddled year and finished 6-26.
The women’s team returns three full-time starters, all guards: seniors DeAirra Goss, Katie Cornello and Dee-Dee Bellamy, plus four veterans who started at least a handful of games a year ago. The men’s team has two returning starters, seniors Mitch Patton and Donovan Gibbs, and two others who either started part-time or would have if injuries had not intervened.
The men’s team used an August trip to Italy to hone its teamwork and get familiar with playing with one another. The time was especially useful to four redshirt players who are now eligible: guards Cortell Busby, Ja’Rob McCallum and Linwood Ross Jr., and forward Elijah Ray.
Both basketball teams are looking to provide some “midwinter heat” in The Jungle to excite the growing number of IUPUI students who live on campus and provide them with a chance to cheer on the Jags.
Fans who want to “gear up” for the 2013-14 season will be able to do so at the Tip-Off Luncheon with a visit to the Barnes & Noble@IUPUI Bookstore stand at the Fairgrounds.
Registration is requested by Oct. 28.
