Congrats Volleyball Team!
December 10, 2013
Congratulations are in order for the IUPUI Women’s Volleyball Team for making its first appearance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The Jaguars faced the #4 Missouri Tigers, the only remaining unbeaten volleyball team in the country, and were certainly the underdog. Although our Jags lost on Friday, they made a very respectable showing, earning praise from commentators.
Other teams that have gone on to the NCAA tournament in the Division I era (1998-present) are the 2000 Men’s Soccer, 2002 Men’s Golf, 2003 Women’s Tennis, 2003 Men’s Basketball, 2004 Women’s Tennis, 2005 Men’s Golf, 2009 Women’s Soccer, 2012 Men’s Golf, and now the 2013 Women’s Volleyball team.
We are proud of the volleyball team’s coaches, Steve Payne, now in his 17th season, and Nicole Cirillo, assistant coach, now in her fifth season at IUPUI. Steve has earned Summit League Coach of the Year honors twice in his career. It was just announced that he also has a perfect Academic Progress Rate score from the NCAA. The Academic Progress Rate, commonly referred to as APR, is a metric created by the NCAA to quantify how much progress member institutions make in moving student-athletes towards graduation.
Congratulations also to Athletic Director Mike Moore, who has helped make IUPUI a first choice for Indiana’s student athletes. From the beginning, Mike has put an emphasis on in-state recruiting. Most of the school's coaches have Indiana roots, and nearly 90 percent of our athletes are in-state students.
For many student-athletes, the decision to attend IUPUI is determined as much by the wide range of academic programs we offer as it is the possibility of an athletic scholarship, so students benefit from the proper balance between academics and athletics that IUPUI’s coaches maintain.
