From the Desk of the Chancellor

Chief of Staff

June 25, 2013

I have asked Jeffrey A. Dean, DDS, MSD, Indiana University School of Dentistry executive associate dean and associate dean for faculty affairs, to serve as my chief of staff, succeeding Andy Klein, who is now dean-designate of the IU McKinney School of Law. Jeff’s core role will be as an adviser to me and the campus’s senior leadership team on strategies and priorities. He will have day-to-day oversight of intercollegiate athletics, act on my behalf on major projects, and assure implementation of tasks undertaken by me or assigned to others. His role in my office will be half-time, allowing him to continue teaching,  seeing patients as part of his pediatric dentistry clinical practice, and serving out his role as executive director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, which he assumed in January 2012.

Jeff is a Purdue University graduate of the baccalaureate program in biochemistry. He went on to earn a DDS, MSD, and Certificate in Orthodontics at the IU School of Dentistry. He joined the school’s faculty in 1985, where he is the Ralph E. McDonald Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and professor of orthodontics.

Jeff will bring distinctive talents to the role, including academic and executive leadership and interpersonal skills honed by decades of experience in clinical practice. As has been the case with previous chiefs of staff, he will be meeting regularly with campus and university leadership to assure that important matters are given appropriate attention, that urgent issues are addressed, and that IUPUI continues to be dynamic in its response to evolving needs and opportunities.
